Why You Should Go After a Market With a Strong Demand Feat. Justin Jackson, Co-Founder of Transistor.FM & Author of Marketing For Developers
This is my most important episode yet!
Welcome to the official newsletter of “The Transition,” brought to you by me, "IRON" Mike Steadman, A Marine Corps Veteran, Social Entrepreneur, and Member of The Bunker Labs Branding Team.
Dear Bunker,
I had a chance to sit down with Justin Jackson, an Indie Maker and Co-Founder of Transistor.FM, a podcast hosting and analytics platform that hosts the Transition podcasts, in order to discuss the importance of identifying a market with strong demand.
This is the most important episode that I recorded thus far.
Justin’s been publishing on the internet and sharing his entrepreneurial journey for over ten years. He’s a leader in the indie maker, movement, a community of bootstrapped entrepreneurs who bypass venture capital and self-fund their own tech products.
Over the years, Justin’s launched countless tech products and businesses, including a snowboard shop, an online course, and most recently Transistor.FM. He’s even written a book entitled “Marketing For Developers: A Guide To Marketing Your Software, Apps, and Digital products.” Over the course of his journey, Justin’s learned the importance of developing a market-first mindset and identifying business opportunities that serve existing demand, instead of trying to generate it.
In his article, “Business is like surfing,” Justin writes, “In the beginning, it probably doesn't make sense to spend much time thinking about positioning, sales, and marketing. These things are important, but only if you’ve first identified the right opportunity. The way you position your board is important once you're riding a wave. But, positioning won't help your product if there's no demand.” As entrepreneurs, we respond to existing demand, we don’t create it. The market should already be “pulling” for what you’re building; the demand should already exist.
No matter how great of an entrepreneur you are, if there’s no demand for what you offer, you will fail.
On the show, Justin shares his journey to developing a market-first mindset, why it’s important for Veteran entrepreneurs to do the same, and some common misconceptions about entrepreneurial success. I’m a huge fan of Justin and am honored to finally get on the show, so make sure you’ve got some pen and paper ready to take some notes.
